After massive Russian attacks, smoke often covers Ukrainian cities. Fires caused by missile and drone strikes release toxic particles into the air, making it hard to breathe and worsening air quality for millions. When smoke from Russia’s strikes covers streets, residents are advised to keep windows closed, stay indoors whenever possible, and drink plenty of water.

The consequences of Russia’s attacks are palpable in destroyed and damaged homes, in wounded civilians, in nights spent in shelters instead of bedrooms – and in polluted air that endangers the health of every resident of the attacked city. These effects are impacting the lives of people for years to come.

The harms of Russia’s aggression are countless. But there is only one way to stop it: it is to force Russia into a just peace – through sustained international pressure.
